A Day in Damyang – Bamboo Haven

Written by on July 10, 2014 in Travel, Worldwide Korea Bloggers

The town of Damyang is located near Gwangju in Jeollanam-do.  This town is about 3.5 hours south of Seoul.  It is a beautiful place to relax and take in nature.  There are so many things to see and do that you could easily keep yourself busy for a whole weekend or even longer if you have the time.

Damyang has many places that are famous but is most famous for its’ bamboo.  Every year they hold the Damyang Bamboo Festival.  This festival is very large and is a great way to spend the day.  But you do not need this festival to enjoy all that Damyang has to offer.

Damyang Tree Lined Path

One of the famous tourist spots of Damyang is the Metasequoia lined Road.

This 3 km road is lined on both sides with large beautiful trees.  For those of us that have grown up in the US it is reminicient of driveways to old homes but here in Korea it is quiet unique.  These trees were planted back in the 1970’s.  They have grown very large and at most points touch each other at the top making a very long shaded walkway.  It is easy to walk to this street from the terminal but better to take a taxi or the bus the short way.  It is also 1,000원 to enter.

From the Metasequoia Tree lined road to the Juknokwon Bamboo garden you can walk along Gwanbang Jaelim (관방제림).  This path also has bikes for rent.  You can use the bikes for 10,000원 and you can take it just one way.  It was a lot of fun~

This path will come out along the river.  This river runs along the area where you can find the Juknokwon Bamboo garden.  There are rocks in the river bed that you can walk across to get to the other side of the river.

The entrance of Juknokwon Bamboo garden is very easy to find.  It is 2,000원 to enter.  The garden is very large and so peaceful to walk throughout.

You can find a few places with pavilions that you can lay on for an afternoon nap.  Even when it is very hot outside the trees provide a very cool feeling.  Perfect for relaxing!

During the Bamboo Festival they also have a fishing experience that looked like a lot of fun.  I hate fish so I didn’t partake but those who did looked like they were enjoying it a lot~

The walkway along both sides of the river are perfect for a stroll.  Damyang is a beautiful little town that you should not miss.  Not only is this town famous for its’ bamboo but it is also has numerous other products that are grown here.

Getting to Damyang is very easy if you plan ahead.  There is a direct bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal that leaves at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.  It takes 3 hours and 30 minutes.  If those are all booked then you can also take a bus or train to Gwangju (Jeollanam-do).  From the terminal you can catch a local bus #311 that will take you to Damyang.  Its about a 50 minute ride.  When getting on the bus the driver may ask you where you are going.  He needs to know so he can set the T-money to the right price.  So if he says something when you get on just say Damyang^^
